Multipurpose Medicinal Herbal - Centella Gotukola

Centella is a widely used herbal among local peoples in daily diets since ancient times. We are still using for many meals as well as herbal recipes. I had good experiences since my childhood with this amazing herbal for making many meals, drinks and medicines.


Centella grows in many regions of Sri Lanka. Prostrate stems 10 cm-1 m long. Leaves 1-6, clustered on a short shoot at each node, orbicular to reniform in outline, 0.5 to 2 cm long, 1-3 cm broad, margins entire, crenate or dentate. Petioles 1-10 cm long, pedicels very short, 0.5 to 1 mm long.


Chemistry


Centella contains pentacyclic triterpenoids, including asiaticoside, brahmoside, Asiatic acid, and Brahmic acid (madecassic acid). Other constituents include centellose, centelloside, and madecassoside.
